British Values

At Hob Moor we recognise the importance of educating and actively promoting the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values are threaded throughout our PSHE and wider curriculums, ethos, culture and approaches to behaviour at Hob Moor. It is expected that our children should understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law. The school’s ethos, curriculum and teaching support the rule of English civil and criminal law. See below for how we cover these values in many ways throughout school.

Democracy – Every child has the right to be heard (UNCRC)

School councillors are chosen through a democratic process of informed class votes. Regular Pupil Voice surveys are completed to shape school decisions and changes to curriculum and extracurricular activities. Pupils are listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard. Pupils are encouraged to take ownership of not only their school but also of their own learning and progress. This encourages a heightened sense of both personal and social responsibility and is demonstrated on a daily basis by our pupils.

The rule of law – Every child has the right to an education (UNCRC)

We have high expectations about pupil conduct and this is reflected in our Behaviour Policy. There are rewards for exhibiting good and caring behaviour and consistent demonstration of our values is recognised through such things as ‘Star of the Week’ and ‘Pupil of the Week’ awards. Through our school assemblies, circle time and PSHE children are taught how to earn trust and respect and are supported to develop a strong sense of morality; knowing right from wrong and doing the right thing even when it’s difficult. The local police officer / PCSO visits the school to talk to the children and explain about their role in society developing this link through small group, targeted intervention work. Children are taught about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and learn to respect their rights and the rights of others.

Individual liberty – Every child has the right to be protected from harm (UNCRC)

Being able to celebrate what makes us unique is important to everyone at Hob Moor Primary. Through discussing protected characteristics and learning about different cultures within our PSHE and wider creative curriculum pupils are able to build their understanding of the world around them in Modern British society. All children at hob Moor are valued and their voices are listened to. We promote a culture of consent, understanding that everyone has personal boundaries and the right to say no, within our safe and inclusive environment.

Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs – Every child has the right to be treated equally and with respect, practice their own religion and culture (UNCRC)

We have high expectations about pupil conduct and this is reflected in our Behaviour Policy and Single Equality Policy. Children are taught about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and learn to respect their rights and the rights of others.Protected characteristics are covered within our policies and behaviour strategies. Mutual respect is promoted further through PSHE lessons and assemblies. British values are integral to SMSC development.Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs is promoted through the syllabus for Religious Education. Children learn about different religions, their beliefs, places of worship and festivals. The children’s work on this subject or whole school learning in assemblies is often displayed in the classrooms or around the school. This is supplemented by assemblies (Key Stage and whole school), which also mark and celebrate significant religious festivals.
