Learning Challenge Curriculum

Over the course of the year, children in Key Stage 1 will be taught Geography, History, Music, Art, PSHE, Computing, Science, DT, RE through our Learning Challenge Curriculum.

Our Learning Challenge topics for this year are:

Autumn 1 – REACH for Greatness

Autumn 2 – The Vile Victorians

Spring 1 – Into the Woods

Spring 2 – London’s Burning

Summer 1 – Far From Home

Summer 2 – Beside the Seaside.

Reading – Children take part in guided reading every day, where they focus on their reading fluency and applying phonics to longer pieces of text. In these sessions the children also complete a number of challenges which include phonics games and spelling activities.

We take part in whole-class reading three times a week where we enjoy spending time discussing the themes of stories, poems and non-fiction texts, digging deeper into the text and drawing out inferences and opinions about what is happening.

Home reading books are sent home every Wednesday and Friday. We really encourage reading at home every day and celebrate home reading by handing out certificates on a weekly basis. Our ‘Good Work’ assembly will take place every other Tuesday and reading certificates will be given out as part of our assembly. Reading is part of your child’s homework and they have a challenge to read at least five times a week. Please do spend time listening to your child read and discussing their reading with them to help them improve their understanding and fluency.  We would be grateful if you could then write a note and sign their reading record to show they have read to you. Children also have access to ‘Bug Club’ – an online reading platform where the children can read a range of phonic-based books and other games and activities linked to phonics. If you are unsure of how to access this, please ask a member of staff.
